The election of the Hawke Labor government in 1983 marked the critical moment of Australian political economy in the twentieth century. The ensuing 13 years of continuous ALP government represented an epochal shift to the period now known as the neoliberal era. Understanding this period of recent Australian history has taken on a renewed significance as the Rudd Labor government struggles to deal with the financial crisis afflicting the global capitalist system. The prevailing interpretation of the recent past will undoubtedly shape the rationale for constructing the future.
